At Social Model Recovery Systems, we proudly celebrate team members whose dedication, resilience, and passion inspire those around them. Today, we are honored to recognize the incredible achievement of Brandon James, Program Director of Housing and Alumni, for earning his Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College.

From surviving to thriving. Brandon’s journey reflects the power of recovery, education, and never giving up
This accomplishment represents far more than an academic milestone. It is a powerful reflection of perseverance, personal growth, and an unwavering commitment to serving others and creating meaningful change in the lives of those in recovery and beyond.
After graduating from Los Angeles City College with two associate degrees, Brandon felt inspired to continue his educational journey and pursue a degree in Human Development. He was drawn to the field because of its unique ability to combine psychology, sociology, education, health services, and business, providing a deeper understanding of how to support individuals as they navigate life’s transitions and challenges.
Throughout his undergraduate studies, Brandon demonstrated exceptional discipline, focus, and determination. He learned the importance of time management, preparation, and striving for excellence in every assignment. His hard work and commitment paid off as he maintained a remarkable 4.0 GPA, an achievement that reflects both his academic dedication and personal drive.
One of the most meaningful influences on Brandon’s educational journey was his former counselor, Raymond Monk, while he was a resident at The Royal Palms in 2007. Brandon recalls being inspired by Raymond’s own pursuit of higher education later in life and the encouragement he provided to others along the way. Their conversations after class became a source of motivation that ultimately inspired Brandon to enroll at Los Angeles City College and continue building a brighter future through education.
Brandon’s journey was also shaped by real-world experiences that deepened his compassion and understanding of the communities he serves. During his internship in the Skid Row community, he gained valuable insight into the importance of empathy, dignity, and person-centered care. The experience strengthened his passion for helping others and reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are with compassion and respect.
For Brandon, earning his bachelor’s degree symbolizes far more than academic success, it represents perseverance, personal achievement, and the fulfillment of a goal that once seemed distant. His journey is a powerful testament to determination, self-belief, and the transformative impact of continuous growth. Through higher education, Brandon strengthened not only his critical thinking, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, but also the confidence to continue leading and serving others with purpose, empathy, and compassion every day.
As someone who understands the value of persistence and hard work, Brandon encourages students pursuing higher education to remain committed to their goals even when the journey becomes difficult. His advice is simple yet deeply meaningful: study hard, proofread your work, and never give up. His story serves as an inspiring reminder that dedication, resilience, and perseverance can turn aspirations into achievements.
Brandon’s journey reflects the very values we strive to uphold at Social Model Recovery Systems, perseverance, lifelong learning, compassion, and service to others. His accomplishment is not only a personal milestone, but also an inspiration to colleagues, participants, and communities alike. Brandon’s story reminds us all that education has the power to transform lives, uplift communities, and create opportunities for a brighter future.
Congratulations, Brandon, on this outstanding accomplishment. Your dedication and determination continue to inspire us all.
