Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) was honored to participate in a recent discussion with the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Los Angeles County leaders, and behavioral health partners focused on addressing addiction, mental health, recovery, and homelessness in Los Angeles County.

The meeting, convened by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, brought together leaders from across the behavioral health system to present innovative, community-based approaches to supporting people experiencing substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and homelessness. Conversations centered around prevention, treatment, recovery support services, housing, peer engagement, and the importance of meeting people where they are with compassion, dignity, and care.

As part of the discussion, SMRS helped represent the perspective of community-based providers collaborating directly with individuals and families impacted by homelessness, substance use, and behavioral health challenges across Los Angeles County. The conversation also highlighted the importance of collaboration between public agencies, nonprofit providers, healthcare systems, peers, and faith-based organizations to create pathways toward healing, stability, recovery, and hope.

SMRS remains grateful to stand alongside community partners, providers, and public health agencies working every day to support healing, recovery, stability, and hope for individuals and families across Los Angeles County.
