A Day of Relaxation and Healing at the Beach

In an effort to blend therapy with recreation, residents of River Community, a renowned program under Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), were treated to a revitalizing day at the beach. The event, which took place last weekend, was organized by Program Director Sarah Tostado. The event was led by Primary Counselors Krystle Peguero, Haylee Coburn, and Julian Ahorro, with the support of Clinical Supervisor Kelly Boardman, ensuring enjoyable experience for all residents.

The beach day was carefully planned to offer residents a mix of relaxation and therapeutic activities for a recovery experience. The beautiful weather and calm waves provided the setting for a day filled with joy, friendship, and personal development.

One of the standout activities was surfing. Some residents who already knew how to surf were able to use foam boards generously donated by Krystle. The surfing sessions were supervised by the staff, ensuring that these experienced residents felt safe and supported as they ventured into the waves. The excitement was palpable as they successfully stood on their boards and rode the surf, celebrating each small victory with cheers and high-fives.

Apart from the excitement of surfing, the day also featured a variety of beach games,  moments of relaxation under the sun,  and chances for residents to forge connections with each other and the staff. The laid-back atmosphere encouraged discussions strengthening the supportive community vibe for which River Community is renowned.

“These events play a role in our residents’ mental and emotional health.” explained Program Director Sarah Tostado. “They offer a break from routines and help foster trust and stronger relationships among residents and staff.”

River Community’s beach day shows the program’s commitment to healing. The staff understand that recovery can happen in many ways, so they always look for ways to mix therapy with fun and relaxation. This helps residents not only in their recovery but also in finding joy and strength again.
