Jessica Cano first joined Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) in July 2022 as an MFT trainee completing her practicum. At the time, she was earning her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University.
After completing her internship in June 2023, Jessica officially joined SMRS as a Primary Counselor in August 2023. Now, she is beginning a new chapter as Clinical Coordinator/LPHA at PCADD AOD.
Jessica was drawn to this work because she has always wanted to help people feel heard, supported, and capable of making meaningful changes in their lives. Working in mental health and addiction recovery has allowed her to support people from different backgrounds as they face mental health challenges, substance use, and major life transitions.
“This promotion means so much to me because it reflects how much I have grown since starting at SMRS as an intern,” Jessica shared. “It feels rewarding to have my hard work, dedication, and commitment to the people we serve recognized. It is also an exciting next step in my professional journey as both a clinician and a leader.”
As Clinical Coordinator, Jessica looks forward to growing as a leader, supporting the PCADD AOD team, and helping strengthen the quality of care provided to participants.
PCADD AOD Program Director Joanna Gomez shared that Jessica’s gentle and compassionate nature is what stands out most.
“Jessica has such a gentle spirit,” Joanna shared. “Her compassion and the gentle way she serves our participants speak volumes about who she is.”
Jessica is grateful to her former managers, Elaine Hansen and Brenda Lopez-Cota Ruiz, for recognizing her potential; her clinical supervisor, Jessica Bushmeyer, for her continued guidance and compassion; and her former director, Gloria Loera, for showing her the opportunities for growth within her reach. She also thanks Joanna for welcoming her to the PCADD team, along with the colleagues, friends, and family members who have encouraged her.
“My experience with SMRS has truly come full circle,” Jessica said. “I started as a graduate student completing my practicum, became a Primary Counselor, and now I have the opportunity to step into a leadership role. I am proud of how far I have come and thankful that SMRS has been an important part of my growth.”
