As we approach May 7th, communities nationwide are getting ready for National Fentanyl Awareness Day. This day, now in its third year, is crucial for learning, thinking, and acting against the harmful effects of fentanyl. Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), a nonprofit helping people with substance use and mental health issues, is leading the charge.

The importance of National Fentanyl Awareness Day is clear, especially considering the alarming number of fentanyl-related overdoses. Sadly, over 70,000 Americans died from fentanyl overdoses just in 2023. What makes this crisis worse is that fentanyl is often hidden in illegal drugs, like fake pills and street drugs, without people knowing. This hidden danger greatly increases the chances of accidental overdose, showing why it’s crucial for everyone to work together and stay informed.

At the heart of National Fentanyl Awareness Day is a collective effort to mobilize diverse stakeholders. Individuals, families, educators, businesses, influencers, community organizations, and government entities join forces with one common goal: to eliminate the threat of fentanyl from our neighborhoods and safeguard the well-being of our loved ones. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, participants seek to dispel myths about fentanyl and empower individuals with the knowledge to make informed choices. Notably, Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) plays a crucial role in this endeavor, with projects like the United Coalition East (UCEPP), which is dedicated to addressing substance use disorder (SUD) issues in downtown Los Angeles’ Central City East area, commonly known as “Skid Row.” UCEPP, a project of SMRS, engages the most vulnerable populations, challenges systemic conditions, and promotes social justice, aligning perfectly with the goals of National Fentanyl Awareness Day. By leveraging grassroots research, assessment, and innovative approaches, UCEPP strives to prevent and reduce the impact of substance use in the community, inspiring positive change and fostering a healthier environment for all.

National Fentanyl Awareness Day presents a significant opportunity for SMRS to highlight the vital efforts in substance use and mental health treatment. By drawing attention to the fentanyl crisis, SMRS aims to increase awareness not only about the risks of fentanyl but also about the necessity of accessible, compassionate support for individuals grappling with substance use disorders. Through initiatives such as comprehensive treatment programs, counseling services, and community resources, SMRS works tirelessly to tackle the underlying causes of addiction and offers pathways to recovery and resilience.

As we mark another National Fentanyl Awareness Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to confronting this public health crisis with unwavering resolve.

Together, we have the power to affect change, save lives, and build healthier, more resilient communities. Let us stand in solidarity against the menace of fentanyl, honoring the memory of those we have lost and forging a path toward a brighter, drug-free future for generations to come.
