as expressed by River Community Program Director Sarah Tostado

In 2019, I had the privilege of working alongside Donald “Frank” Fagan at a different location in Riverside. At the time, Frank was on a path to becoming a counselor, but circumstances led him to take on kitchen duties when they lost their kitchen supervisor.

Despite his initial redirection, Frank’s innate helpfulness shone through, and he embraced the role, putting his counseling aspirations on hold.

When I came onboard, I recognized Frank’s passion and potential. In discussing his career goals, I discovered his true desire to become a counselor. Without hesitation, I changed his position title, and together, we navigated kitchen chores until a new kitchen supervisor was appointed. Frank’s dedication and work ethic during this time left an indelible impression.

Frank’s journey continued when I moved to a different location. He expressed his desire to join me. How could I refuse? In June 2021, Frank began his tenure at River Community Azusa, starting as graveyard staff. His rapid progression to primary aide and eventually primary counselor showcased his unwavering commitment.

Beyond his professional prowess, Frank brought an infectious enthusiasm and joy to even the most challenging situations. It was nearly impossible not to be cheerful and grateful when Frank was around. His outlook on life and consistent motivation inspired everyone in his vicinity to strive for their best.

Despite his numerous responsibilities, Frank remained a pillar of support for his community. I often found myself urging him to go home and take breaks to prevent burnout, a testament to his tireless dedication. Remarkably, Frank never complained – he loved his work wholeheartedly.

Frank’s personal journey was equally remarkable. With 19 years of sobriety after a tumultuous past, he stood as a pure example of how recovery can transform a life. His story was an inspiration for everyone who knew him, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

In honoring Frank, we remember not just a dedicated counselor, but a compassionate soul whose positive impact reverberated far beyond the professional realm. His legacy serves as a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, one can emerge stronger, bringing light and inspiration to others.

River Community staff released balloons and planted a tree to pay tribute to Frank whose positive impact reached far beyond the professional realm.

Donald “Frank” Fagan will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
