Honoring a Regional Director Whose Journey Came Full Circle
Some careers begin with an opportunity. Others grow from life experience, inner strength, and a deep desire to help others.
For nearly two decades, Melanie Arellano, Regional Director of Los Angeles, has exemplified what it means to transform personal recovery into a life of service. Her journey with Social Model Recovery Systems began not as an employee, but as a resident at Mariposa before the Mid Valley merger with SMRS.

Three years after completing treatment, Melanie returned, not as a resident, but as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor determined to help others find the same hope she had discovered.
From Counselor to Program Director, and ultimately Regional Director, her career has been a reflection of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the people we serve.
For Melanie, the years she spent at Mariposa were more than part of her career. They were deeply meaningful years spent walking alongside women and children during some of the most important moments in their lives. That experience helped shape her heart for service and the compassionate leader she became.
She also played an important role in bringing Mid Valley into Social Model Recovery (SMRS) Systems and later helped guide large residential programs across Los Angeles. Each step became an important part of her leadership journey and her continued commitment to serving others.
Just as meaningful was the opportunity to introduce and cultivate the SMRS culture throughout the Los Angeles region while developing the next generation of leaders.
A Story That Stayed With Her
One story continues to remind Melanie why this work matters.
Early in her career at Mariposa, Melanie worked with a 19-year-old resident who was living with severe mental illness and had survived many suicide attempts. With compassion, steady support, and the young woman’s own incredible determination, she began to rebuild her life.
Over time, she returned to Cambridge University, completed her master’s degree, and went on to become a teacher, artist, and poet.
Seeing that kind of transformation stayed with Melanie. It reminded her of something she has carried throughout her career: people are more than the hardest parts of their story. Healing is possible. Strength can be found again. And sometimes, connection can reach people in ways that correction alone cannot.
These experiences ultimately inspired her to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist.
Beginning a New Chapter
Although Melanie once envisioned retiring from SMRS, an opportunity to pursue that dream has led her to begin a new chapter. She leaves knowing that the values she developed here—our Core Beliefs of compassion, integrity, respect, and hope—will continue to shape her work as a therapist.

When asked what has kept her committed for so many years, her answer is simple:
“My passion to help people who have been through the toughest times of their lives, and I loved helping leaders transform into a leader that their team needed. I am a loyal person and have never considered working at another treatment agency because I believe SMRS is the best one out there. I anticipated retiring from SMRS, or at minimum staying on since I am one year away from 20 years, but I have an opportunity that overrides those goals in pursuit of my one big goal of Marriage and Family Therapy.”
Throughout her career, Melanie has also learned invaluable lessons from the residents she served.
“Healing is possible even when someone has lost everything. Trauma is often beneath behavior, and connection heals more than correction.”
Advice for Those Beginning Their Journey
To those just beginning careers in behavioral health, Melanie offers heartfelt advice:
“Start by remembering that you don’t have to be perfect to be effective. New staff often think they need the perfect words, perfect interventions, or perfect answers. What matters most is presence, showing up consistently, being respectful, and staying regulated when things get messy. Residents and participants will always remember how you made them feel far more than whether you used clinical phrasing. Find meaning in small moments and wins.”
As she reflects on her journey, she describes it in three words: Transformative. Resilient. Hard-earned.
Gratitude for Mentors, Colleagues, and Friends
Before leaving, Melanie expressed deep gratitude to the mentors, colleagues, and friends who have supported, encouraged, and inspired her throughout her journey.
Bruce Boardman, CEO
For believing in me, for continuing to encourage me to pursue a formal education, and for helping me get through some difficult times when he was my direct supervisor. As my supervisor, Bruce was fun to brainstorm ideas with. He has the ability to inspire me to see and utilize my strengths.
Tim Stevens, CFO
Tim brings steadiness, kindness, and professionalism, especially when systems feel under pressure. He is reliable and committed to doing things the right way, even in the face of any challenge.
Chris Abernathy, COO
Chris leads through vision, action, and compassion. He stays engaged in complex situations without stepping back. He trusts his staff to make necessary decisions for their teams and departments. He shows strong dedication to SMRS and a practical, solutions-focused approach.
Mike Schaub, Senior Director, Community Relations
Mike has been a grounding presence who has always allowed me to be fully myself without judgment. He has often been a beacon of hope and a brother, reminding me of the importance of authenticity, passion for the work, and connection to the community we serve.
Vanessa Ramos, Program Director
Vanessa embodies Social Model Recovery Systems’ Core Beliefs and alumni success. Vanessa embodies compassionate leadership and a deep commitment to those she serves. Her structure and presence are both inspiring and steady, uplifting those around her through care and integrity.
