On January 30th, Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) proudly celebrates the 38th anniversary of River Community, a groundbreaking program dedicated to treating individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Nestled in the serene San Gabriel Mountains, River Community has been a sanctuary of healing, growth, and hope for thousands of individuals since welcoming its first resident in 1987.

A Legacy of Innovation and Compassion

In 1986, SMRS acquired a property in the Angeles National Forest, north of Azusa, California, and established River Community—a 39-bed facility that would become the nation’s first long-term residential treatment program for adults with co-occurring disorders. At a time when mental health and addiction services often operated in silos, River Community pioneered an integrated, holistic approach that recognized the interplay between mental health and substance use.

For nearly four decades, River Community has filled a vital gap in the treatment landscape, offering individuals comprehensive care that addresses both mental health and substance use challenges simultaneously. This innovative model has transformed countless lives, fostering resilience, recovery, and renewal for those seeking to reclaim their futures.

Healing Amidst Nature

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Angeles National Forest and the serene flow of the San Gabriel River, River Community offers a unique and immersive environment that fosters healing and transformation. The location’s natural tranquility creates a space for residents to reflect, grow, and connect with their inner selves, away from the distractions and stresses of daily life. This serene environment offers residents a sense of stability and peace that supports their recovery journey. The connection to nature is more than aesthetic; it’s a vital component of the healing process, providing individuals with the calm and focus needed to rebuild their lives.

Personalized Recovery for Lasting Change

At River Community, recovery is deeply personalized to honor the unique needs of every individual. Treatment plans are thoughtfully customized to integrate group and individual therapy, participation in self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and daily activities that focus on promoting abstinence and addressing major mental health challenges.

Under the leadership of Program Director Sarah Tostado, who brings over 20 years of experience in the field, the program emphasizes a comprehensive approach to care. This includes rebuilding family relationships, empowering residents to rediscover their sense of purpose, and reintegrating them into their communities as confident and resilient individuals. By prioritizing these tailored strategies, River Community ensures that each resident receives the support they need to achieve sustained recovery and long-term success.

A Beacon of Hope

For 38 years, River Community has embodied Social Model Recovery Systems’ core beliefs by fostering a safe and nurturing environment where individuals are treated with dignity and respect, becoming a beacon of hope and transformative care. These values foster trust, encourage personal growth, and empower residents to rebuild their lives. By modeling healthy behaviors and embracing each person’s unique strengths and experiences, River Community not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens the broader community. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the compassion and dedication of all staff members whose tireless efforts have created an environment where healing thrives.
