As the seasons shift, it’s not uncommon for our mental well-being to shift as well. December marks SAD Awareness Month, a time dedicated to understanding and addressing Seasonal Affective Disorder—a type of depression that’s directly related to the changing seasons. Most often, symptoms begin in the fall and continue through the winter months, leaving you feeling moody and drained. Less commonly, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer and resolves during the fall or winter months.

Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is more than just the winter blues; it’s a real condition that can manifest as persistent sadness, a lack of interest in activities once enjoyed, and changes in sleep patterns or appetite. These symptoms can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of daily life from personal relationships to professional responsibilities.

The exact causes of SAD are still being studied, but it is believed to be related to the reduced level of sunlight in fall and winter months. This decrease in sunlight can upset your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, and may also lead to a drop in serotonin levels—a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that affects mood. Additionally, the change in seasons can disrupt the balance of melatonin, which influences sleep patterns and mood.

For individuals in recovery from substance use disorders, the depressive symptoms of SAD can complicate the journey towards recovery. Emotional lows and increased stress during this period can make it challenging to stay focused on recovery goals. Finding healthy strategies to manage mood symptoms is important for maintaining progress. Effectively addressing and managing SAD is crucial for supporting ongoing recovery and preventing potential setbacks.
