October marks Substance Use Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preventing substance use and its devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. At Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), we believe in the power of prevention as a critical part of fostering healthier communities. Our efforts, rooted in our vision and service mission, focus on creating environments that promote recovery, personal responsibility, and mutual self-help.

The Importance of Prevention

Substance use prevention is more than just reducing access to harmful substances—it is about addressing the root causes and systemic conditions that lead to substance use disorders. Prevention helps create a foundation of wellness, where individuals can thrive socially, economically, and spiritually, free from the impacts of alcohol and other substances. During Substance Use Prevention Month, we reflect on the vital role prevention plays in supporting overall community health.

Prevention is not limited to any one group; it spans all ages and sectors of society. SMRS recognizes that successful prevention efforts require collaboration and community engagement. As part of a continuum of care that includes intervention, treatment, and recovery, prevention strategies reach a wide variety of individuals from those who have never used substances to those in recovery. Our prevention programs aim to empower people to make healthier choices by building skills, fostering community involvement, and addressing underlying social and institutional issues.

Leading Prevention Initiatives

SMRS is committed to addressing the complex needs of vulnerable populations through several targeted prevention efforts:

  • United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP): Founded in 1996, UCEPP focuses on the Central City East area of Los Angeles, commonly known as Skid Row. UCEPP works to engage vulnerable populations in challenging systemic conditions and social disparities that threaten a healthy environment. By conducting grassroots research and organizing community efforts, UCEPP promotes social justice and aims to prevent or reduce the impact of substance use in this underserved area.
  • Tobacco Free Partnership – Bell/South Gate: SMRS also works to protect youth from tobacco use through this partnership, which prevents access to tobacco products in local communities. Early intervention and education are critical to stopping the cycle of addiction before it begins, making this a vital part of our prevention strategy.

Prevention efforts at SMRS are deeply rooted in our belief that the most effective solutions come from within the community. By fostering local initiatives and civic participation, we work to reduce negative influences that can lead to substance use, while nurturing wellness, cultural awareness, and a strong sense of community pride.

Honoring Substance Use Prevention Month

As we observe Substance Use Prevention Month this October, Social Model Recovery Systems reaffirms its commitment to preventing the harmful effects of substance use. Through innovative prevention strategies, community-led solutions, and an unwavering dedication to social justice, SMRS continues to lead the way in creating healthier communities free from alcohol, drug, and mental health challenges.

Together, we can make a difference—because prevention is not just an option; it’s a necessity for the well-being of all.
