Stepping Stones, a program of Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), is thrilled to announce Kai Soto’s recent promotion to Program Manager.

Kai Soto’s story is a testament to the power of transformation and dedication. Her relationship with Stepping Stones began in 2007 when she joined as a resident. Navigating the challenges of recovery, she soon transitioned to sober living and then took on the role of overnight staff. While living at Stepping Stones with her son, Kai balanced her responsibilities while pursuing her education. In 2008, she began volunteering in the office, registered with CAADE (California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators), and attended Mt. San Antonio College. She continued her journey and became a counselor, a role that saw her through years of growth and transformation.

“It was challenging but a great opportunity to counsel people with similar experiences. Stepping Stones is my heart; it feels like home to me.” Kai recalls.

After nearly a decade at Stepping Stones, Kai ventured into the restaurant business. Despite her success, the call to return to recovery services remained strong. In 2022, she returned as a counselor, quickly advancing to Admissions Counselor and now Program Manager.

Kai’s background is deeply personal. As a recipient of recovery services in her youth, she faced significant challenges, including losing custody of her sons. Determined to break the generational cycle, the support she received ignited her desire to give back.

“I saw the blessings happening to me as I got clean and was so grateful. I promised myself and God that I would help people for the rest of my life,” she shares. “Even in the restaurant business, everything led me back to this field. This is where I need to be.”

As Program Manager, Kai aims to continue Stepping Stones’ legacy of saving lives while maintaining its unique sense of home. Her goal is to empower the women in treatment and strengthen the relationship with its alumni. She is also committed to mastering the business aspects of the program, especially with evolving Drug Medi-Cal requirements, balancing professionalism with compassion.

Kai’s personal journey adds depth to her professional achievements. After losing custody of her sons, she experienced the joy of reuniting with them, a milestone she attributes to the support received at Stepping Stones. Her seven boys and three grandsons are a source of immense pride, and her sons are eager to share with others how Stepping Stones saved their mom. Her whole life has come full circle, reinforcing her commitment to the community she serves.

Kai Soto’s personal victory fuels her commitment to the Stepping Stones community. Determined to never lose her family again, she vowed to fight for the rest of her life, a promise rooted in her transformative experience at Stepping Stones. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of recovery services, embodying the spirit of SMRS. As she steps into her new role, Kai is poised to lead with the heart and determination that have defined her path. Her story is an inspiration to all, proving that with resilience and support, anyone can overcome their past and build a brighter future.
