Paying Tribute to a Lifelong Commitment to Healing and Hope.
We are deeply honored to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Donald J. Kurth, who was prominently remembered at the 75th Annual International Doctors in Alcoholics Anonymous (IDAA) Conference. Held from July 10-14, 2024, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Maryland, this year’s conference brought together healthcare professionals from around the world dedicated to recovery and support for those struggling with substance use disorders.
A former President of California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM), President of American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and Medical Director of Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), Dr. Kurth left an indelible mark on the field of addiction medicine. His contributions and compassionate approach to patient care were profoundly acknowledged throughout the conference. The theme for this year, “Our Safe Harbor,” resonated deeply with Dr. Kurth’s commitment to providing a supportive and nurturing environment for those in recovery.
Dr. Kurth’s extensive knowledge and experience in addressing alcohol and drug addiction were invaluable to SMRS. His advocacy for the voiceless and commitment to the field highlighted his extraordinary character. During his tenure as Medical Director, Dr. Kurth played a pivotal role in developing treatment protocols, enhancing withdrawal management services, and training staff. Dr. Kurth’s approachable nature and relentless pursuit of knowledge inspired many within the organization.
Representing Social Model Recovery Systems at this esteemed event was our Senior Director of Community Relations, Mike Schaub. Mike’s participation underscored our organization’s dedication to continuing the work and legacy of Dr. Kurth. Engaging with thought leaders in addiction medicine, Mike had the opportunity to highlight the innovative practices inspired by Dr. Kurth’s vision and leadership.
At the culmination of the conference, a poignant moment of silence was held in Dr. Kurth’s honor. This tribute was a heartfelt reflection on his impactful legacy and the countless lives he touched. Dr. Kurth was not only a medical expert but also a passionate advocate for those suffering from addiction. His leadership and dedication helped shape the policies and practices that continue to benefit individuals in recovery today.
This year’s IDAA conference, the first after his passing, not only served as a platform to honor Dr. Kurth but also fostered connections and collaborations that will further our mission at Social Model Recovery Systems. The knowledge and experiences shared at the conference will enhance our ability to provide top-tier treatment and prevention services, staying true to Dr. Kurth’s vision.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the organizers of the IDAA conference for creating such a meaningful and transformative event. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to upholding the legacy of Dr. Donald J. Kurth.
