June is Men’s Health Awareness Month, a time to remind men that taking care of their health matters. This includes not only physical health, but also mental and emotional well-being.

Many men may avoid going to the doctor or may not feel comfortable talking about what they are going through. Because of this, health concerns can sometimes go unnoticed or untreated for too long. By encouraging regular checkups, healthy habits, physical activity, and supportive connections, we can help men take small but meaningful steps toward better overall health.

Physical activity is an important part of men’s overall health. Sports and games not only strengthen the body and support heart health but also lift a person’s mood, reduce stress, and bring people together.

That is why, instead of giving a presentation on men’s physical and mental well-being, we wanted to create a space where alumni could experience it firsthand through movement, connection, laughter, and brotherhood.

In honor of Men’s Health Awareness Month, Omni Center hosted the Alumni Brotherhood BBQ on June 25. The event brought alumni together for food, laughter, games, and meaningful connections. James Murrell, Director of Omni Center, and Sorayda Torres, Alumni Outreach and Engagement Liaison, worked together to make the event possible. We would also like to give a special thank you to the Omni Center staff, Community-Based Housing and Alumni Program Director Brandon James, and the Community-Based Housing team for their support and help throughout the day.

Alumni enjoyed a variety of games and activities, including volleyball, basketball, Jenga, ping pong, and Connect Four. These activities were more than just fun. They encouraged movement, teamwork, connection, and healthy ways to release stress.

The purpose of the event was simple: to provide a space where men could reconnect, enjoy themselves, stay active, and be reminded that wellness can also include joy, laughter, and brotherhood.

Recovery is not always easy, but days like this help us see the importance of pausing, connecting, and enjoying the journey. The day ended with a raffle, filled with smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of connection among the alumni.
