Community-Based Housing and Alumni, led by Program Director Brandon James, and Omni Center, led by Program Director James Murrell, hosted a Juneteenth celebration at Omni Center.

The event brought residents, alumni, staff, and community members together for food, dancing, games, and time to connect. It was a day to honor the meaning of Juneteenth, celebrate freedom and resilience, and enjoy being together as a community.

Brandon shared that the purpose of the event was to help others learn about the cultural and historical importance of Juneteenth, while also giving those who already knew its meaning a chance to celebrate. He also shared that events like this are important for recovery because they allow people to have fun, connect with others, and enjoy themselves in a sober, supportive space.

The day was filled with smiles, music, games, and home-cooked soul food. Deon Hunter, Kitchen Supervisor at Omni Center, also helped with the cooking, helping make the meal feel even more special and personal. Brandon said it felt good to see residents, alumni, staff, and community members dancing, playing games, trying different foods, and enjoying the day together.

One moment that stayed with Brandon was when a resident told him, “Those were the best ribs I have ever had.”

James shared that his hope was for residents to experience “recognition, reflection, and empowerment.” He wanted the celebration to help residents understand the historical significance of Juneteenth while also creating space for “pride, cultural awareness, and healing.” He also shared that the themes of freedom and resilience can connect to each person’s recovery journey.

More than a celebration, the day gave everyone time to pause, honor history, share food, feel the community’s support, and connect. It was a meaningful reflection of how healing can happen in simple gatherings when people come together.

At Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS), celebrations like this show that recovery is also about connection, belonging, and creating moments where people feel seen, supported, and valued.
