This September, Social Model Recovery Systems held a Recovery Happens BBQ in honor of National Recovery Month. The gathering brought together residents, participants, and staff from across our programs to share food, fun, and community.

The park was alive with music, laughter, and the smell of barbecue. People came together not only to enjoy a good meal, but to dance, play games, and take part in activities that reminded everyone of the joy found in connection. Staff and residents joined side by side, celebrating the progress made and the hope that continues to grow in recovery.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was the recovery countdown. Starting with those who have more than 30 years of sobriety and working down to those celebrating one day, each milestone was met with cheers and applause. It was a moving reminder that recovery is sustained one day at a time, and that every step forward deserves recognition.

Throughout the event, people shared reflections on their journeys. Some spoke about learning new ways to cope with life’s challenges, while others highlighted the importance of honesty, patience, and community support. For those newer in recovery, the message was clear: give yourself a chance, stay committed, and know that a better life is possible.

“Recovery Happens” is more than a theme—it’s a truth we see every day. Healing is real and, recovery thrives when people come together to support one another. At Social Model Recovery Systems, we believe every person deserves the chance to rebuild their life with hope and resilience.

Events like the Recovery Happens BBQ show what recovery looks like in action: a community celebrating progress, lifting each other up, and proving that recovery is something to be honored and embraced. This celebration was a reminder that whether it’s three decades or one day, every milestone matters.
