Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) held its quarterly All Agency Meeting this July under the energizing theme Drumbeats of Summer, bringing together staff from across the organization to celebrate innovation, unity, and years of dedicated service.

The event kicked off with a high-spirited drum circle led by SoCal Drum Party, filling the room with vibrant energy and collective rhythm. Staff members participated using drums and percussion instruments, creating a strong sense of togetherness. Beyond the excitement, the experience underscored how rhythm and connection can ground us, reduce stress, and open pathways for emotional expression—an essential component of healing and recovery.

Following the energizing drum circle, Dr. Anna Lee, Director of Innovation, presented Innovations in Engagement Across Programs, focusing on strategies that enhance involvement and connection in behavioral health settings. She highlighted the Rhythm 2 Recovery (R2R) model, developed by Simon Faulkner in 2003, which uses rhythmic drumming exercises to promote emotional regulation, social connection, and personal growth. Grounded in evidence-based practices, R2R integrates elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, and Positive Psychology, and applies universal life-skills themes through reflective discussions.

Dr. Lee also introduced the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in treatment, specifically through C2Care’s platform, which includes over 180 immersive environments designed to support exposure therapy, mindfulness, and relapse prevention. The VR system is equipped with built-in AI and is used to address a range of conditions, including anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance use disorders, and more. These tools support the development of coping skills, conflict resolution, and assertive communication—offering new pathways for client engagement and recovery.
The second half of the meeting focused on celebrating the agency’s most valuable asset: its people. During the Service Awards Ceremony, team members were recognized for achieving milestones of 5, 10, and 30 years of service. Each award was presented by the recipient’s supervisor, who offered personal reflections on their contributions and growth. Honorees also had the opportunity to share a few words, expressing gratitude and inspiration with their peers.
