In an effort to foster connection and collaboration, Program Director Joanna Gomez recently led a team-building event for the staff at Pasadena Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (PCADD). The outing took place in Long Beach and featured a dolphin and whale watching excursion designed to give staff a chance to relax, recharge, and strengthen their working relationships outside of the traditional office setting.

While the group did not encounter any whales during the trip, they were treated to an unforgettable experience as groups of dolphins appeared, swimming alongside the boat and captivating everyone on board. The opportunity to witness these creatures in their natural habitat brought a sense of wonder and enjoyment to the day, helping to cultivate a deeper sense of camaraderie among team members.

More than just a break from routine, the excursion served as a reminder of the value of shared experiences in building a cohesive, motivated team. In the field of behavioral health, where staff are often called upon to provide high levels of care and emotional support, these moments of connection are essential. The time spent together away from work allowed staff to strengthen interpersonal bonds, improve communication, and return to their roles with a renewed sense of unity and purpose.

By organizing this thoughtful and engaging event, Joanna demonstrated a commitment to the well-being of her team—recognizing that a supportive, connected workplace culture directly contributes to the quality of care PCADD provides. The outing offered a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the importance of teamwork, trust, and collaboration in advancing the program’s mission.

Overall, the dolphin-watching trip proved to be both a joyful experience and a valuable investment in team cohesion. As the staff returned to their work, they did so with a greater sense of connection to one another and to the shared goals they strive toward each day. Events like these not only strengthen professional relationships but also reinforce the foundation of mutual respect and support that drives effective and compassionate care at PCADD.
