April 30, 2025 | Whittier Narrows Recreation Park
On April 30, the Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) family came together for something truly special, our Denim Day celebration at Whittier Narrows Recreation Park.
Led by Vanessa Ramos, Program Director at Royal Palms, the event was more than just a sunny day at the park. It was a powerful gathering filled with purpose, connection, and community.

Residents, participants, and staff from all 11 of our treatment programs showed up in full force, proudly wearing denim in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence and to help raise awareness about the importance of breaking the silence and challenging harmful stereotypes.

The smell of burgers and hot dogs filled the air and brought everyone together. Our awesome chefs; Albert Grant from Royal Palms, Ray Ledford from River Community Azusa, Gerald Soriano from Bimini, and Deon Hunter from Omni, kept the grill going and the smiles coming. It wasn’t just food, it was a chance to connect, laugh, and enjoy the day like one big family.
Leadership from across the agency joined in, including CEO Bruce Boardman, Senior Director, Treatment Services Denise Hernandez Felice, Regional Directors Melanie Arellano and Elizabeth Ello, and Senior Director of Clinical Services Lynetta Hale. Their presence showed just how much this cause matters, not just as professionals, but as people standing with our community.
“My favorite part of Denim Day was seeing the participants fully engaged — soccer, volleyball, corn hole, Tetris, football, dancing — everyone was having fun and feeling free,” shared Vanessa Ramos. “It was beautiful to witness.”
More than just a day of games and good food, Denim Day reminded us why we do what we do. To speak up. To stand with survivors. To hold space for healing. And to keep building a culture of care where everyone feels seen and supported.

We left the park a little fuller — of joy, of pride, and of hope.
