Social Model Recovery Systems is pleased to announce Armando Gonzalez as the new Project Coordinator for the Community Centered Emergency Room Project (CCERP), our Boyle Heights prevention program. Armando joined SMRS in November 2024, contributing to our prevention work at the United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP) in Skid Row and through our weekly Shower of Hope collaboration in Boyle Heights.

Growing up in Los Angeles, Armando saw the devastating effects of gang violence and drug abuse in his Boyle Heights community. At 15, he lost a close friend to gang violence, a tragedy that shaped his decision to forge a different path. Instead of joining a gang, he found solace and purpose in skateboarding, which became both an escape and a platform for mentorship and positive youth development. His desire to give back led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in social work from California State University, Los Angeles.
For over 20 years, Armando has empowered vulnerable communities through leadership roles in gang prevention, intervention, policy advocacy, and nonprofit management. In 2010, he founded Soul Skating LA, blending skateboarding with youth mentorship and launching Soul Academy, a gang prevention program that nurtured leadership skills and provided a safe space for at-risk youth. He later served as Director of Operations and Program Development at Pueblo del Sol Community Service Center, managing health, job readiness, and youth programs for Boyle Heights families.
Recently, Armando has focused on addressing the complex challenges of substance use, mental health, and homelessness. He has seen how systemic barriers in housing, healthcare, and economic opportunities intensify these issues, particularly in communities like Skid Row and Boyle Heights. As Project Coordinator for CCERP, Armando is committed to creating both immediate and lasting solutions, including partnerships for emergency housing, substance use outreach programs, and sustainable support systems for those experiencing homelessness. Armando is a devoted father with a passion for learning and spiritual growth. We are excited to see the positive impact his leadership will bring as we continue to expand our prevention efforts.
