On February 21, 2025, Social Model Recovery Systems participated in the 15th Annual “It Happens to Boys” Conference, hosted by Creative Change Conferences in Palm Desert, CA. This important event addressed the sensitive issue of childhood sexual abuse of boys, creating a space for open dialogue, healing, and education. The conference brought together a diverse group of participants, including law enforcement, social workers, therapists, and survivors. Mike Schaub, Senior Director of Community Relations at Social Model Recovery Systems, served as Master of Ceremonies, guiding the event through a day of impactful sessions.


The conference kicked off with a powerful presentation by Daniel Marquez, who shared a deeply personal story of overcoming childhood sexual abuse and the emotional toll it took on his life. He focused on the importance of healing from trauma and embracing vulnerability in the healing process. David Fawcett, PhD, a psychotherapist specializing in sexualized drug use and LGBTQ+ issues, provided an in-depth look at the intersection of substance use, high-risk sexual behaviors, and trauma. He highlighted the importance of trauma-informed care when treating individuals struggling with chemsex and substance use disorder. His presentation emphasized the need to address both physical health and mental health for effective healing, offering practical insights for clinicians working with these populations.

Next, Dan Griffin led a session that explored male socialization, fatherhood, and relational struggles, particularly how childhood trauma can impact men’s relationships with their children. He shared insightful strategies to help men heal, emphasizing the need for fathers to embrace emotional vulnerability to build stronger, more connected relationships with their children. Dave Pelzer, author of A Child Called “It”, captivated the audience with his story of overcoming severe childhood abuse. His journey of resilience highlighted the strength of the human spirit and encouraged attendees to approach their own challenges with courage and perseverance.
Jerry Moe, M.A., followed with a presentation focused on the impact of addiction on children and the importance of providing early intervention and support. He discussed strategies for working with children affected by addiction and how healing can begin by addressing the emotional needs of both children and parents. His expertise provided practical tools for clinicians to support families in recovery and create a more nurturing environment for children impacted by addiction. Sparrow, a mental health professional, provided a deeply insightful session on intergenerational trauma in Native American communities. Sparrow discussed the lasting effects of colonization and cultural suppression, underscoring the need for culturally sensitive healing practices that honor Native traditions.


The conference concluded with Carol Teitelbaum, MFT, founder of Creative Change Conferences, who shared her work with male survivors of sexual abuse. She provided valuable tools for therapists and medical professionals to help men heal from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse, empowering them to break the cycle of shame and regain emotional connection.
