This past week, the Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) program leadership team had the opportunity to retreat from the day-to-day hustle and spend a restorative day in beautiful Big Bear. Organized by our dedicated Regional Directors, Melanie Arellano (Los Angeles) and Elizabeth Ello (San Gabriel Valley), this one-day wellness retreat allowed for the team to connect on a relaxing and nurturing level. Participants of the retreat engaged in creative expression, which was the perfect chance for our leaders to unplug, recharge, reconnect,  and reclaim their purpose.

The day was rich with activities designed to promote wellness as well as creativity. Through mindfulness exercises, creative workshops, and team-building activities, leaders were offered a valuable opportunity to step back from their routine responsibilities and focus on personal growth and self-care. Such initiatives are pivotal in not just personal but also professional development, fostering a nurturing environment that enhances problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.

Our leadership team left the retreat feeling valued and appreciated, acknowledging the thoughtful effort by the regional directors to prioritize their well-being. This break was essential for our leaders to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their inner purpose, which is crucial in a field as demanding as ours. The benefits of such a retreat extend beyond the immediate relaxation. They help in reducing burnout, increasing job satisfaction, and boosting overall morale. Engaged and well-rested employees are more effective and empathetic in their roles, which is vital in our mission to serve those in recovery.

Moreover, the retreat underscored the importance of self-care among those who dedicate themselves to serving others. In the recovery field, where workers often encounter high levels of stress and emotional fatigue, it is crucial to remember that caring for oneself is linked to the quality of care they can provide to others. By investing in the wellness of our employees, we not only enhance their quality of life but also elevate the quality of service they provide, creating a more compassionate and understanding environment for those we serve.

We at SMRS are incredibly grateful for our talented and dedicated leadership team, and we are committed to continuing our support for their well-being and professional growth. We recognize that by nurturing our team, we are strengthening the foundation of our service and enhancing our community’s ability to thrive.
