We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Charles Porter as the new Senior Director, Prevention Services at Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS). With a distinguished public health career spanning more than two decades, Charles brings extensive experience, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to fostering meaningful connections in the communities we serve.
Charles’ journey with SMRS began in 1999 through the United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP), where he has continuously demonstrated his commitment and innovation. Throughout his tenure, he has overseen prevention and community initiatives, used community data to inform strategic decisions, and shown an unwavering commitment to the Skid Row community. His integration of culturally responsive practices has been key to addressing complex challenges and achieving lasting, positive outcomes in the programs he leads.
Charles’ contributions extend far beyond his work at SMRS, touching the lives of countless individuals across diverse communities. As an avid drummer, he spent many years studying under the esteemed Afro-Cuban drummer Felipe Garcia-Villamil, a journey that not only sharpened his musical talent but also deepened his cultural understanding and polished his Spanish-speaking skills, allowing him to connect more profoundly with diverse populations. A true advocate for cultural awareness, Charles understands that culture is not just a backdrop but a dynamic force that shapes resilience, behavior and the bonds that unite communities together. He has creatively woven cultural practices—like drumming, dancing, singing, and martial arts—into his prevention efforts, particularly to engage youth experiencing homelessness.
As Chairperson of SMRS’ Cultural Awareness Committee, Charles has developed culturally relevant resources, with a strong focus on tailoring interventions to each community’s unique needs. His leadership extends to chairing the LA County’s Rethinking Access to Marijuana (RAM) Policy Committee and serving as co-chair of the Skid Row Park Advisory Board, the Downtown Mental Health Community Advisory Board, and the Skid Row Community Services Roundtable.
We are confident that Charles will elevate SMRS’ prevention initiatives with his expertise, passion, and leadership. His deep understanding of community needs, paired with a strong commitment to public health, positions him to drive meaningful change and further our mission of providing essential prevention services to vulnerable populations. Charles’ strategic vision and dedication will undoubtedly expand SMRS’ impact and help build healthier, more resilient communities.
Join us in welcoming Charles Porter as our new Senior Director, Prevention Services. We look forward to the extraordinary milestones we will achieve together under his leadership, confident that his contributions will create a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
