In a vibrant celebration of freedom and fellowship, Community-Based Housing Director Brandon James organized a memorable Juneteenth event filled with music and a feast of home-cooked soul food.

This festive gathering aimed to honor the historical significance of Juneteenth while fostering a sense of unity and cultural awareness among residents and participants.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of all enslaved. This day has evolved into a time of reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and heritage.

The event, held at Omni Center’s courtyard, kicked off with an energetic set by a local DJ who played an eclectic mix of genres, with a strong emphasis on dance and tracks relevant to Juneteenth. The music featured lyrics and beats that celebrated freedom, resilience, and cultural pride. Attendees were seen swaying and dancing to the rhythm, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the day was a short presentation held to educate attendees about the significance of Juneteenth. Regina Owens-Durant, Royal Palms Primary Counselor, shared the historical context and importance of Juneteenth, emphasizing its role in commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This informative session provided valuable insights and deepened the sense of purpose and pride among the residents and participants.

Before the feast commenced, Brandon James delivered an inspiring speech on recovery and gratitude. Brandon highlighted the journey many residents had undertaken towards recovery, acknowledging the challenges, and celebrating the progress made. He emphasized the importance of community support, resilience, and the spirit of gratitude that reinforces the recovery process. Brandon’s heartfelt words resonated deeply with the audience, reminding everyone of the collective strength and shared goals within the community.

No Juneteenth celebration would be complete without a feast. From Southern style beans to barbecue chicken and pork ribs, the menu offered a delectable taste of Soul Food. Residents and participants shared meals, stories, and laughter, embodying the spirit of community.

This Juneteenth celebration by the Community-Based Housing Department was more than just a festive gathering; it was a testament to the strength and resilience of the community. By honoring heritage and celebrating freedom, the event served as a reminder of the importance of community, culture, and the ongoing journey toward equity and recovery.
