Luis Berumen, SUDCC II
Primary Counselor, Bimini
The decision to pursue a career in this field was deeply influenced by a poignant quote by Arnold Schwarzenegger: “Experience comes from bad judgment; Good judgment comes from experience.” Throughout my upbringing, I was surrounded by environments plagued by substance abuse, ranging from the Crack epidemic to the current crisis of Fentanyl abuse. Witnessing the profound impact of substance abuse on individuals and families, I observed how it altered communication patterns, leading to expressions of desperation and a quest for attention. Families seemed to adopt three distinct ‘Love languages’: Do Not Talk, Do Not Feel, and Do Not Trust, symbolized by the phrases Shut Up, Shut Down, and Shut Out. It became evident that for many, substance abuse served as a coping mechanism to evade confronting their emotions, resulting in arrested emotional development akin to teenage immaturity. This realization fueled my conviction that true fulfillment lies in assisting individuals in reclaiming their lives from the grip of substance abuse, recognizing their humanity, and addressing their behaviors with empathy and respect. This personal epiphany propelled me towards a dedicated pursuit of human services, culminating in my certification as an SUDCC II. Engaging in this vital work not only allows me to empower others in cultivating self-efficacy and autonomy but also facilitates my own growth and self-awareness.
I believe Social Model Recovery Systems offers a formidable platform equipped with a robust infrastructure that aligns seamlessly with my professional goals. The organization’s unwavering commitment to fostering a nurturing therapeutic milieu, providing comprehensive employee support, and embracing a holistic approach to combatting the pervasive issue of substance abuse resonates deeply with my mission of aiding individuals grappling with substance use and mental health challenges. By collaborating with residents within this framework, I aim to empower them with the tools and resources necessary to navigate their struggles effectively, paving the way for a healthier lifestyle and liberation from the shackles of a chronic disease.
Claudia Contreras, RADT
Primary Aide, Mariposa
I made the decision to return to this field after experiencing the devastating loss of my 19-year-old daughter to a fentanyl poisoning in 2023. As I approached the one-year anniversary of her passing, I felt a strong calling to channel my grief into meaningful action by dedicating my life to assisting others who are also enduring similar hardships.
By aligning myself with Social Model Recovery Systems, I firmly believe that I will be provided with the necessary support and opportunities for personal and professional growth. This organization will not only enable me to pursue further education in the future but also empower me to achieve my goals and make a lasting impact on individuals who are grappling with adversity.
Brenda Trujillo, RADT

This organization not only supports my personal growth but also fosters continuous learning in an area that holds significant meaning to me. By aligning with SMRS, I am confident that I can make a positive impact on individuals and communities in need.
