In honor of International Women’s Month, residents of Social Model Recovery Systems Los Angeles programs gathered in our LGBTQ+ residential program, Royal Palms. Organized by the dedicated LA Team, which includes Regional Director Melanie Arellano and Program Directors Vanessa Ramos, Maria Reyes, Vivian Escamilla, and Carlos Aguilar, the day was set to be a vivid representation of unity, empowerment, and reflection. The team’s effort to commemorate the month dedicated to women was not just a celebration but a meaningful gathering that aimed to instill a sense of pride and self-worth among the residents.
At this event, all female and female-identifying residents participated in reflective group sessions led by Sonia Casas and Diane Redondo, Program Manager and Admissions Counselor at Mariposa (a residential program dedicated to women and women with children). The first session centered on the theme of self-reflection, encouraging participants to delve deeply into their own lives to recognize and celebrate their inherent good qualities, a much-needed perspective shift from the usual tendency to dwell on the negative. In the second session, the residents were guided through a journey of reconnection with their inner child, encouraging them to confront and heal the experiences that have influenced their adult lives. Facilitators led the group through therapeutic discussions and exercises designed to foster understanding, compassion, and healing for their younger selves. These sessions not only highlighted the essence of women empowering each other but also addressed the crucial aspect of healing the inner child, paving the way for a journey towards self-love and acceptance.
Parallel to this empowering group, the male and male-identifying residents congregated in the ballroom for an equally impactful activity. Under the guidance of Carlos Aguilar, Program Director of Omni Center (a residential program dedicated to men), they watched the documentary “Feminist in Cell Block Y.” This documentary showcases inmates in an all-male prison who explore feminist theories to challenge and redefine their understandings of masculinity and power. This activity encouraged the residents to confront and reassess their perceptions and behaviors towards women, themselves, and society at large. The documentary served as a catalyst for deep reflection and dialogue among the participants, highlighting the connections between gender norms, toxic masculinity, and the cycle of addiction. By engaging with the film’s themes, the men embarked on a journey of self-awareness and empathy, crucial steps in their paths toward recovery and personal growth.
The International Women’s Month event at Royal Palms was a powerful demonstration of collective reflection, understanding, and empowerment. By dedicating time and space to both celebrate women and address the deep-seated issues of gender norms and toxic masculinity, the event bridged the gap between awareness and action. The thoughtful organization of the LA team ensured that every resident embarked on a journey towards greater self-awareness, empathy, and healing. It was a pivotal moment of unity and empowerment, fostering a supportive community environment where all residents could feel valued and understood. In honoring International Women’s Month, this event beautifully illustrated the ongoing commitment to nurturing a culture of respect, love, and equity.
