Located In the heart of Los Angeles, the Skid Row community is home to thousands of individuals who struggle with homelessness and hunger daily.
Amidst the harsh realities of life on the streets, it can be difficult for people experiencing homelessness to access basic human necessities. Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) responded to this challenge by working closely with the Skid Row Community Coalition to conceptualize and identify funding for the Skid Row Community ReFresh Spot (ReFresh Spot).
In December 2017, in partnership with Homeless Health Care Los Angeles, SMRS successfully helped to launch this initiative. This community-driven project offers access to restrooms, showers, and laundry services, and additional support, including linkages to healthcare, housing, minor infraction clearance, food, clothing, pet resources, etc.
The partnership illustrates the impactful difference that can be achieved when non-profits work closely with local communities. SMRS recognizes that personal hygiene is a fundamental aspect of self-worth and dignity, and as such, helps to provide these critical resources.
During Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, we acknowledge and celebrate the incredible work being done to enhance the lives of people experiencing homelessness and hunger. Let this community-led initiative serve as an inspiration for us to support and advocate for similar initiatives in our communities.
