October is National Youth Substance Use Prevention Month in the United States (U.S.), a time when communities unite to address the pressing issue of substance use among our nation’s youth.

Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) is actively working to improve the lives of young people through our prevention initiatives. With programs like United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP), Tobacco Free Partnership, and All Children Thrive Boyle Heights, led by Senior Director of Prevention and Community Initiatives, Zelenne Cardenas, SMRS offers crucial support and resources for young people facing substance use challenges.

Youth substance use is widespread with far-reaching consequences for individuals, families, and society. Its effects range from impaired health to poor academic performance, involvement with the criminal justice system, and strained relationships. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, October is designated in the U.S. as a month devoted to prevention activities, education, and outreach.

At SMRS, prevention is not solely about refusing drugs; it’s about empowering young people and building resilient communities. Beyond education, we provide comprehensive strategies to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to resist peer pressure and life’s challenges.

Through our prevention efforts, SMRS actively engages schools, community centers, and families to provide vital education not just on the risks of substance use but also on highlighting the importance of mental health and overall well-being.

Collaboration is key. SMRS works hand-in-hand with local organizations, government bodies, and concerned citizens, fostering a united front against youth substance use.

We foster safe and judgment-free environments where young people can openly share their struggles, seek help, and develop a sense of belonging. By reducing the stigma surrounding substance use, these spaces encourage early intervention and open dialogue.

As we celebrate National Youth Substance Use Prevention Month, let us recognize and appreciate the efforts of our prevention team, which is dedicated to empowering our youth toward healthier, substance-free futures. Together, we can ensure that every young person has the opportunity to thrive and succeed, free from the grip of substance use.
