Cynthia Merchain, RADT
Primary Counselor, Stepping Stones
My decision to enter this field was influenced by my late best friend, who served as both a mentor and an inspiration to me. She was a highly respected drug and alcohol counselor, and under her guidance, I learned how to reclaim the joy in my life. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with breast cancer, leaving an irreplaceable void. Our bond was like no other, and during one of our conversations, she urged me to consider a career as a drug and alcohol counselor. Though initially hesitant, as I was content in my role as a mental health worker, she enlightened me on the inherent rewards and benefits of this profession. She emphasized that it would be more than just a job; it would be a calling filled with countless blessings, allowing me to assist individuals facing challenges similar to my own. The time I spent with her was a gift, and following her passing on February 22, 2023, I made a commitment to honor her memory by pursuing the path she had encouraged me to explore. As a result, I made the difficult decision to leave my eight-year tenure and joined Social Model Recovery Systems, where I am actively pursuing my dream as a drug and alcohol counselor.
Tina Johnson, RADT
Primary Counselor, Stepping Stones
I have chosen to pursue a career in this field due to my deep-rooted passion for assisting individuals in need. Having personally experienced addiction for over 13 years, I understand the challenges that come with seeking treatment and the level of commitment required to embark on the path to recovery. Stepping Stones, with its nurturing and supportive environment, resonates with me as a family. I firmly believe I can continue to grow within this field with the support of an organization like Social Model Recovery Systems.
Amada Alvarez, RADT
Primary Aide, OMNI
My decision to work in the field of recovery comes from my own mistakes. So, with that, I developed a deep passion for helping individuals overcome the devastating impact of addiction. Witnessing and going through it myself, I see the destructive consequences of substance abuse on both individuals and their families. I am driven by the desire to contribute to the well-being and empowerment of those affected by addiction.
One of the key aspects that drew me to Social Model Recovery Systems is the emphasis on individual empowerment. By shifting the focus from a passive recipient of treatment to an active participant in their own recovery, individuals regain a sense of control over their lives. Through engaging in support groups, self-help programs, and peer mentorship, individuals are encouraged to take ownership of their recovery journey, make informed choices, and develop the skills necessary to maintain sobriety in the face of challenges.
I am truly grateful to be a part of this family and excited to see what the future brings.

Gerardo “Gerry” Barraza
Primary Counselor, Mid Valley Outpatient
I made the decision to work in the field of substance abuse to provide others with the same hope that was once offered to me. This hope fueled my desire to become a better person for myself, my family, and my community. Now, my goal is to share this same optimism with those whom I assist. I believe Social Model Recovery Systems will help me achieve my goals through the continued fostering of a culture that promotes excellence in both participants and staff. I am grateful to be a part of this wonderful organization that upholds core beliefs that inspire me to excel.
