Jessica Liu MSW, ACSW
Clinical Coordinator, Mid Valley Outpatient

I chose to work in this field because of my belief in the potential for people to change and my belief that everyone deserves consistent care and support. My experience of seeing loved ones affected by the disease of addiction has shown me that everyone’s story with addiction is unique, and so I want to do my part to help participants take back and change their narrative for the better. At Social Model Recovery Systems, I believe that I can gain the knowledge and experience of how to become a more skilled care professional by learning from other experienced colleagues, supervisors, trainings, and education that are here at this agency.

Morgan K. Valdez, SUDRC
Primary Counselor, Mid Valley Outpatient

I chose to finally pursue a career in this field due to the ever-increasing ability Social Model Recovery Systems has exhibited in being able to reach those struggling with addiction or behavioral diseases. To be able to be a member of a program that continually advocates for those struggling and who are in-need, is one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life, and I am exceptionally grateful for the opportunity. As of right now, my primary intention is to continue learning, advocating, and doing my best to be of the utmost service possible to my team and participants.

Chandra Smith, LPT
River Community Covina

This field chose me. I knew I wanted to help within the psychiatric community, so I became a Psychiatric Technician, with plans to work for a state facility. During my clinicals at River Community Covina and River Community Azusa, I began to grow a connection with the participants, residents, and staff that chose to do this good work. The idea that I could be a part of making a difference in even one person’s life began to become more tangible. The energy and compassion for this work that I felt at the All-Agency meeting was unlike anything else I had experienced in my professional life. I am honored and proud to be here, and I am eager to learn more about the connections between mental health and addiction.

Phil Jackson, B.S., RADT
Group Facilitator, Royal Palms

I chose a career in addiction treatment because I fundamentally believe in the inherent worth of every individual, and that they are deserving of dignity and respect. I am convinced that everyone possesses the capacity for growth and the potential to become the best version of themselves, regardless of their past actions. My ideal role is that of a mentor and guide, creating a supportive environment equipped with the necessary tools for people to initiate positive change in their lives.

I see myself as a facilitator of transformation, helping individuals on their journey towards self-improvement. Social Model Recovery Systems plays a pivotal role in my aspirations, serving as a platform to not only attain my master’s degree in social work but also to gain invaluable experience directly serving the community about which I am so passionate. Through Social Model Recovery Systems, I anticipate opportunities for continuous learning and personal growth, ultimately positioning me for a management role where I can have a broader impact on the field and the lives of those seeking help.

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”   -Thich Nhat Hanh-
