Social Model Recovery Systems celebrated African American History Month at the main office by gathering for a barbecue featuring ribs, chicken, shrimp, and other traditional dishes and decorating our lobby with African American history-themed decor.

Before we gathered for a sumptuous feast prepared by Brandon James, we had an African American presentation. Ms. Ann Houston-Sago presented on African American History in the Aviation industry.

Everyone took some time to learn. It is important to know the history and to know who has made important contributions to aviation over the years. By learning about and celebrating African American history in aviation, we can honor their achievements and inspire future generations to pursue careers in aviation and beyond.

African American history in aviation is a rich and inspiring part of American history. Despite facing significant obstacles and discrimination, African Americans have made important contributions to aviation over the years. Here are some notable figures and milestones in Black aviation history:

  1. Bessie Coleman: Bessie Coleman was the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States. She learned to fly in France in 1921 and went on to become a popular stunt pilot in the United States, performing in air shows across the country.
  2. Tuskegee Airmen: The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American pilots who served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. They were the first African American pilots to fly for the United States military, and they earned a reputation for their skill and bravery in combat.
  3. Guion Bluford: Guion Bluford was the first African American astronaut to fly in space. He made four space shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992.
  4. David Harris: The first African American pilot to fly a commercial airline when he was hired by American Airlines in 1964. David Harris retired as a Captain after a 30-year career.
  5. Black Wings Exhibit: The Black Wings Exhibit is a traveling exhibit that highlights the contributions of African American people to aviation history. It includes artifacts, photographs, and stories about Black pilots and other aviation pioneers.

African American History Month is an important celebration that takes place in February each year in the United States, Canada, and several other countries around the world. The month-long celebration is an opportunity to recognize and honor the many contributions of African Americans throughout history and in modern times.

Celebrating African American History Month at our agency is an important way not just to acknowledge and honor the contributions of African Americans to our society but also to raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equity.
