It allows me to give back in a meaningful way and extend the same kind of hope and encouragement that was once given to me.

In 2022, I joined Bimini as a Group Facilitator. That role allowed me to use my creativity and skills to engage residents in meaningful ways, and it set the foundation for my growth in the field. Then, in January 2024, I was offered the opportunity to become an Admissions Counselor, a role I held for one year and eight months. It was in Admissions that I found immense fulfillment in welcoming residents into treatment, often at the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Being the first point of contact gave me the chance to provide empathy, reassurance, and encouragement, which made a lasting impact not only on them, but also on me.

During my time at Bimini, one of the things I enjoyed most was organizing events for residents. From cultural celebrations and holiday gatherings to talent shows, self-care activities, national awareness days, walks, and community volunteering, these events created connection, joy, and a sense of belonging, all of which are vital in recovery.

Today, I’m honored to step into the role of Alumni Engagement & Outreach Liaison. I believe this position is essential because recovery doesn’t end when treatment does. Alumni deserve ongoing connection, support, and recognition of their achievements. My goals are to build a strong alumni network, collect and maintain meaningful data, follow up with alumni, and offer treatment or resources whenever needed. I’m especially excited to coordinate alumni events, celebrate their successes, and ensure they know that Social Model Recovery Systems is here for them every step of the way.

At the heart of it all, my mission is simple: to remind alumni that they are valued, they are not alone, and that SMRS will always remain a source of support, community, and hope.

by Sorayda Torres, New SMRS Alumni Engagement & Outreach Liaison“In Her Own Words” Working in the field of
