The event took place at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles on December 7th.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Experience, Strength, and Hope Award recipient was Danny Trejo. Danny Trejo has had a prolific career in the entertainment industry, yet his road to success has been hard-earned and anything but typical. It has spanned from imprisonment to helping young people battle drug addiction, to acting and producing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

KTLA-TV anchor and reporter, and last year\u2019s recipient, Courtney Friel, presented the award to Danny Trejo. His book, \u201cTrejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood,\u201d takes readers through his days of crime, time in prison, his struggle with addiction, his recovery, and success in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Experience, Strength, and Hope Award<\/em> is given every year by \u201cWriters in Treatment\u201d<\/em> to an individual who has written a memoir about their career and brutally honest about their journey from addiction to clean and sober living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was hosted by six-time Emmy Award Nominee, Ed Begley, Jr. Performances by Grammy Award Winner Philip Lawrence and comedian Paula Poundstone. Tony Denison, \u201cTNT\u2019s Major Crimes\u201d star, presented the \u201cAnnual Reel Film Festival\u2019s Audience Favorite Award\u201d to filmmaker, illustrator, and animator \u201cEvan York\u201d for the short film animation \u201cFruckus\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous recipients were Academy Award-winner Lou Gossett, Jr.; astronaut Buzz Aldrin; star of \u201cFuller House,\u201d Jodie Sweetin; Duran Duran\u2019s John Taylor; Emmy Award-winner Joe Pantoliano; actress Mackenzie Phillips; TV and radio broadcaster Pat O\u2019Brien and journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writers In Treatment is an organization<\/strong>,<\/em> founded in 2008 by Leonard Lee Buschel<\/em> and Robert Downey Sr.<\/em>, to help men and women in the writing<\/em> industry who suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction to get treatment<\/em> for their disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
