APU Mental Health Symposium

Azusa Pacific University hosted a Mental Health Symposium where they invited Social Model Recovery Systems to join a panel of experts to address the myths, stigma, prevention and resources available for college students struggling with Substance Abuse and Suicide. The presentation was well-received by APU’s faculty, staff, students and community members thanks to an amazing job done by Director of Education and Training, Dr. John K. Smith, PhD, LCSW and Senior Director of Treatment Services, Christopher Abernathy, MS. The training provided education on identifying risk and protective factors associated with suicide and substance abuse, in addition to the protocol for responding to students in distress. This symposium also allowed the audience to learn about university support and local agency resources, including services provided by Social Model Recovery Systems. Thank you to these two leaders in our agency for doing an exemplary job of representing Social Model Recovery Systems and demonstrating the indispensable knowledge we strive to provide to our community.
