Happy Anniversary, River Community!

River Community celebrates a historic event today, as the program turns 33 years old. In July 1986, Social Model Recovery Systems, Inc. took possession of River Community, a property in the San Gabriel Mountains. Our first resident was admitted to this beautiful property on January 30, 1987. For 33 years, we have been providing services to adults living with co-occurring disorders! Today, we honored and celebrated this anniversary with a small presentation and a birthday cake.  River Community is in the San Gabriel Mountains, which has been designated as a national monument.  As part of being in the forest, the wonderful property is subject to nature and wildlife. The staff of River Community is grateful to be involved with this historic moment. Happy Anniversary, River Community - and we thank everyone who has helped to make this possible.

Thank you to all our speakers, exhibitors, volunteers, staff members, and attendees who helped make the 2nd Annual California Community Opioid Conference a fantastic event!

Thank you, Fire Station #154!

Year after year, local Fire Station #154 in Covina, has donated toys for our Participant Holiday Parties in Covina and Los Angeles. Firefighter, Dave Monday, came by in his firetruck to drop off gifts to spread holiday cheer again this year. For many of our participants, this may be their first holiday season together with their families in a long time. Some may experience stress of wondering how they will provide gifts for their children. We are honored to be a part of this privilege and grateful for the kindness of local heroes willing to make this holiday season memorable for families in recovery.

NEXT MEETING: Tobacco-Free Covina/West Covina

Congratulations, Dong and Gloria!

River Community is proud to announce that two of our very own primary counselors, Dong Lim and Gloria Medina, have met the requirements to become Certified Addiction Treatment Counselors! We are very excited for the journey and growth of our team! Both of these wonderful individuals have been an integral part of River Community and continue to help each of our residents to achieve recovery!

River Community Harvest Feast 2019

River Community's Annual Harvest Feast was once again a huge success! We had over 250 guests who came to celebrate this season of gratitude. The day was filled with delicious food, live music from River Community's band, a raffle for some beautiful gift baskets, and a fun photo booth to capture the memories. We appreciate all the staff and participants who helped plan and host this event and are looking forward to having it again next year!

USC Fall Lecture: The Collected Schizophrenias

Last week, Ruth Baratta and Yolanda Sinclair, SMRS LPHAs from Mariposa and Rena B, along with Clinical Supervisor, Kelly Boardman, attended USC Gould’s Saks Institute Fall Distinguished Lecture featuring Elyn Saks and Esme Weijun Wang. These two women have fought to successfully overcome the obstacles involved with the diagnosis of Schizophrenia and excel both academically and professionally in their lives. The women gave brief accounts of their personal stories, followed by a discussion by Esme Wang focused on addressing stigma, resilience, and self-advocacy related to individuals who must learn to live with this difficult diagnosis. Both stories were very inspiring and conveyed hope in recovery from the symptoms and stigma of Schizophrenia. A Q&A session followed in which the women asked each other questions of their individual experiences, and then questions were opened to the audience of approximately 100 mental health professionals, students, and consumers.

For more information regarding the personal journeys of Elyn Saks or Esme Weijun Wang, read The Center Cannot Hold by Ms. Saks and The Collected Schizophrenias by Ms. Wang.

We hope to continue to attend this very inspiring annual event focused on mental health issues and recovery!
